I think you are on to something there that makes sense to me. If you are sliding forward, you are messing up the relationship you had with the ball at address and have to compensate in the swing in dipping, flipping sort of ways and are not just turning the body, which is what creates all your power and a solid, square, strike of the ball. I notice when I just take it back and turn through the ball, I get that "effortless power" shot we all seek.

Keeping your head behind the ball does two things for me.
First it keeps your rear power foot driving the turn to completion finishing on the forward foot with the rear knee (and chest) finishing at the target, and helps to prevent dipping the shoulders as you try to compensate a downward striking motion by being out of position.
Since your ahead of the ball, most of the time you can expect a low driving slice unless you get good at flipping your hands.

Anyone else have observations?

I know I should keep my head behind the ball and still as possible. But for me to really learn something I have to know the "physics" behind it. Why is it that when I slide slightly forward on the downswing is the resultant shot not near as powerful as when I keep the head still and behind the ball? Does moving forward a bit just break down the launching power of the turning body? I'm not sure my question is clear, but it is driving me nuts to figure out the physics of the issue. I think it has something to do with power=mass * 1/2 speed law of nature, but would like to discuss. No, I'm not kidding.
